Importance of Native Plants

When invasive species are removed from a landscape, the bare ground is prime habitat for the species to thrive again or new species to move in. This is why native plants are so important when doing ecosystem restoration. By planting native species in areas prone to invasive species it gives the native species a jump start to out compete the invasive species. Native plants in areas not prone to invasive species are just as important to support native species in the ecosystem.

Some things to be aware of when shopping for native plants:

Be wary of plants that are described as fast growing, spreads quickly, and tolerates a variety of conditions; although some native plants have these qualities, these are the characteristics of most invasive species.

Check seed mixes for unwanted species before purchasing.
